Movement Psychology - The creation of character through raising to consciousness the factors of Weight, Space, Time and Flow that shape gesture in the body and speech for the stage; based on the work as developed by Yat Malmgren on the basis of Rudolph Laban’s Movement Psychology and Jung and taught by Yat at Drama Centre.
Janet gained a B.Ed. in the Art and Science of Movement at Nonington College of Physical Education before training as an actress at Drama Centre, where she also trained to become Yat’s movement assistant, which she did for 18 months after graduating. She then went into repertory starting with the Dukes Lancaster and ending at Liverpool Everyman via The Traverse, Newcastle University Theatre, and Victoria Stoke on Trent, after which she appeared in many new plays on the London fringe, particularly at The Bush Theatre and the Soho Poly ( for whom she wrote her first play), and from which her first TV and radio work was generated. . She has also played amongst others, The National Theatre, Manchester Royal Exchange, Bristol Old Vic at the Old Vic, Leicester Haymarket, The Almeida, and in Jamestown (Upstate New York). Her first TV roles were in Within These Walls and Crown Court and her most recent ( 2005/6 ) include Margaret in EastEnders and episodes of Spooks, Doctors and Casualty. Janet was also the original casting co-ordinator of the Adelphi success Me and My Girl and was production assistant for Mike Ockrent on Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre, as well as teaching predominately at Arts Educational Drama for seven years where she also directed many projects and final productions. Other directorial credits include the English premiere of Turcaret at The Gate, Notting Hill, and a joint win of the Manchester Evening News Best Special Entertainment Award in 1998 for the Manchester Youth Theatre with her production of The Winters Tale at The Library, Manchester. Although she hasn’t put pen to paper for many years she anticipates writing again. She also teaches movement, contextual studies and directs projects for Birkbeck College, London University, on their Faculty for Continuing Education Foundation and Diploma Courses.
