About the play
Written in 1953 as a metaphor for McCarthyism, when the US government attempted a ‘witch hunt’ to ostracise communists, Arthur Miller’s 'The Crucible' is a dramatised and partially fictionalised story of the Salem witch trials in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692/93.
The original production won the Tony Award for Best Play and has since become a classic and central work of American drama.
