Acting Courses for Deaf/BSL students
ALRA (The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts) with Krazy Kat Theatre Company present an acting course for deaf/BSL students.
Who is ALRA?
ALRA is a London based Drama School offering vocational training in all aspects of professional acting for theatre and TV and Film. ALRA offers a 1 year Foundation degree, a 3 year BA degree and a 1 year MA degree all in Acting as well as a 2 year Foundation degree in Stage Management and Technical Theatre. ALRA also offers a range of short and access course and this is our third course aimed specifically at Deaf/BSL acting students.
Who is Krazy Kat Theatre Company?
Krazy Kat Theatre Company are specialists in visual, physical theatre who employ hearing and deaf/BSL using actors. Their work is targeted at both deaf and hearing audiences and they are a major innovator in Sign Language Arts. They have an excellent track record in leading workshops for deaf and hearing audiences nationally and internationally.
Theatre Acting Course
21 July –1 August 2008
This course forms an introduction to acting for theatre.
In the mornings we will concentrate on learning about movement, mime, acting and improvisation whilst the afternoons will be spent in rehearsal devising and rehearsing a short play. A performance of the play will take place in the ALRA theatre on the evening of the final day of the course.
24 places are available (2 groups) on this course. Students invited to take part on the course must be available for the entire course.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at young people who are thinking about a career in professional theatre and television, with a view to vocational training. You must be between 16-25 years of age. You must be either a deaf/BSL user or a hearing/BSL user (Level 2+)
Who are the tutors?
All the tutors come from the professional world of theatre and television. Some work regularly with ALRA, some work regularly with Krazy Kat. Some will be deaf, some will be hearing.
What support will there be?
There will be BSL interpreters and CSWs available at all times.
Where is the course taking place?
The course takes place at ALRA, in Wandsworth, South-West London.
How much does it cost?
The courses are subsidised by The Learning and Skills Council and are free to students invited to take part. However, a deposit of £85.00 will be charged to all successful applicants refundable upon completion of the course.
What if I live out of London?
Accommodation will be provided.
How do I get on the courses?

The next audition date is scheduled for Saturday 28 June 2008, 2pm.
The audition process will consist of a short group theatre workshop, a solo 2 minute slot in which to tell a story and an interview.

Easter 2008
ALRA and Krazy Kat ran a 5 day course in Television Acting. 10 young people from around the country attended the course. Accommodation was provided for students who did not live in London. Samuel Dore, a film and television director, David Ellington and Kenny Lawrence, who are both professional actors, were the tutors. The students played games, improvised, devised scenarios. They learnt acting techniques, how to act for camera and how television drama is made. Their work was recorded and edited and they got a short showreel of their work.
