The fundamental physical component taught in the Miller Voice Method, the ‘Active Breath,’ enhances the actor’s ability to remain present and communicate with transparency in order to keep an audience engaged. In this introductory workshop, Kristi Dana, Certified Miller Voice Method teacher, will share the core principles of the work, discuss the theory and science surrounding MVM’s ‘Active Breath’ and guide participants through exercises for physical embodiment and application to text. Bring your insatiable curiosity and get ready to have fun experimenting with flow under the “duress” of performance.

Kristi Dana

kristi danaKristi Dana is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Speech in the division of theatre at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Kristi has also taught at Yale University's Summer Conservatory for Actors, Brooklyn College, Penn State University, Long Island University/Post, the College of Staten Island, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She is a Certified teacher of Miller Voice Method, and Knight-Thompson Speechwork, and holds a Certificate of Completion from the Michael Chekhov Association. Kristi has published in the Voice and Speech Review and presented her work at numerous conferences. Her professional vocal coaching includes Liz Lerman’s tour of Healing Wars and Marie Antoinette at Soho Rep, NYC. As an actor, Dallas credits include world premieres of Matthew Paul Olmos’ so go the ghosts of méxico, part three and Gordon Dahlquist’s Red Chariot at Undermain Theatre and Audrey Cefaly's Alabaster at Kitchen Dog Theater. Board Member, Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA).

BA (Hons) Acting

The BA (Hons) Acting programme of study is suitable for those determined to become professional actors working in today’s Theatre, Screen and Audio industries. Combining practical actor training with theoretical study and research methodologies, this vocational course aims to equip you to operate effectively in a highly competitive artistic industry.

Foundation Acting Diploma

ALRA's Foundation Diploma in Acting gives students a real insight into conservatoire actor training and preparation for working in the industry. It is beneficial for those wishing to pursue professional training at a higher level.

MA Professional Acting

The ALRA MA Professional Acting Course (15 months) is a full time actor training programme that has three taught terms followed by two performance terms; including two theatre productions (one in collaboration with a professional Theatre Company), recording a film and showcases in both London and Manchester.

MA Directing

The ALRA MA Directing course is an innovative new programme which includes an international residency and individual industry mentors. Set within a cutting-edge location at ALRA North, a hive of creative activity and cultural development in the North West. ALRA North is an established and important centre of learning in the Greater Manchester theatre community.

MA Teaching (Creative Performance Practice)*

This innovative teaching course for performing arts professionals is designed for experienced artists or tutors who want to develop their teaching skills in a conservatoire setting.

MFA Linklater Teaching Practice (Voice and Theatre Arts)*

ALRA is collaborating with Kristin Linklater to create a unique Master of Fine Arts degree, subject to validation by St Marys University, Twickenham.

Trinity College London and ALRA

ALRA has a long-standing relationship with Trinity College London which enables students to benefit form the Dance and Drama Awards scheme. This scheme helps students pay for their course fees and some can receive support for living expenses. This is a merit and means-tested award for which all students are eligible for consideration once they have been offered a place at ALRA.

Leicester College 2 Year Acting Degree (Creative Performance Practice)

A performance Degree providing professional preparation, studied intensely over two years.

This course is validated and awarded by De Montfort University and delivered at Leicester College with curriculum and training approaches designed using ALRA's Conservatoire ethos.

OKCU (Oklahoma City University)

The OKCU School of Theatre, in partnership with ALRA, offers a Master of Fine Arts in Screen Acting. This intensive two-year program is delivered in Los Angeles in the first year and in London in the second.

 

Nottingham College 1 Year Acting Foundation – in Association with ALRA

This Foundation Course at Nottingham College is designed to refine skills in preparation for drama school or university. This course is endorsed by ALRA with elements of the Foundation course.

Short Courses and Workshops

ALRA offers a selection of short courses and workshops throughout the year in a range of subjects such as voice, movement and Shakespeare. They are run by approved partners and ALRA tutors and range in length from hours to weeks.

The Northern Centre for Voice and Movement

Having been through a period of intense curriculum development re-considering the way in which we train our actors, ALRA has created a network to support the training industry by hosting and curating networking events focusing on actor movement and actor voice.
