About the play
DH Laurence's plays introduce us to the stark realities of life in a mining community on the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire border at the start of the 20th Century.
These tightly knit communities are depicted in harsh, intimate detail. The delicate balance between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbours is constantly in flux in this double bill of two of his finest pieces of dramatic writing. Each one played out in the constant shadow of the pit wheel.
